1: Universal Music Settles Copyright Dispute with AI Firm Udio
First off today, Rishabh Jaiswal at Reuters reports that Universal Music Group (UMG) has reached a settlement with the AI firm Udio and will partner with the company to build new creative products.
According to the agreement, next year the companies will launch a new platform that is trained solely on authorized and licensed music. Other details of the settlement were not disclosed.
UMG, along with two other major record labels, sued Udio in August 2024. The lawsuit alleged that Udio had unlawfully trained its AI systems on copyright-protected content. Despite UMG settling, the case involving Sony and Warner is continuing.
2: UMG Partners With Stability AI to Develop Music Creation Tools for Artists, Producers
Next up today, Marc Shneider at Billboard reports that, shortly after announcing its settlement with Udio, UMG also announced that it will be teaming up with Stability AI to create tools that have been “responsibly” trained.
Stability AI is known for its Stable Audio models, which specialize in text-based audio generation. In addition to UMG, Stability AI has partnered with Electronic Arts to implement AI in game development.
As for UMG, they have also been active in forming partnerships. They have formed relationships with YouTube, TikTok, and Meta to make UMG music available on those platforms, with compensation for labels and artists.
3: Mike Fleming Jr: ‘Road House’ Round 2 Pits Doug Liman Vs Amazon MGM In Dueling Sequels
Finally, today, Mike Fleming Jr. at Deadline reports that a long-running dispute over the rights to the 1989 film Road House has led to two competing sequels being developed.
The first film is entitled Road House: Dylan. It’s backed by director Doug Liman, who created the 2024 remake. Liman claims to have secured the sequel rights from the script’s original author, R. Lance Hill, and plans to move forward with the project shortly. However, Amazon MGM Studios has also begun production on Road House 2.
The 2024 film was released by Amazon but sparked a split between Liman and the company over its distribution. Currently, the rights to the film are disputed, as Hill claims to have reclaimed his rights to the original script via copyright termination, a position Amazon and MGM dispute.
