1: New York Times, Chicago Tribune Sue Tech Company Brave Over AI Copyright Claims

First off today, AJ Katz at The Wrap reports that four newspapers have filed separate lawsuits against the tech company Brave, alleging the browser maker scraped their content and then sold access to it to AI companies, including Anthropic, Mistral, xAI, and Perplexity.

Brave is a browser company that makes the privacy-focused Brave browser. However, according to the lawsuits, that browser has been scraping content, including paywalled content, from various news publishers and selling it to third parties, including AI companies.

The New York Times said that it repeatedly warned Brave to stop the practice. However, the company continued to do so. Neither Brave nor the AI companies mentioned have commented on the lawsuit.

2: WME Urges “Ethical & Responsible” AI in NYT Copyright Battle With Sam Altman

Next up today, Dominic Patten at Deadline reports that WME has filed a brief in the ongoing battle between the New York Times and OpenAI. In it, they largely sided with the Times but argued that AI itself is not the problem, but that it must be done with “proper compensation and authorization.”

The brief, which was filed on October 30, is an attempt to sway the judge in the nearly three-year-old case. The publisher sued OpenAI in December 2023, alleging that the company illegally used its content to train its AI models, most notably ChatGPT.

WME’s brief is one of many filed in the case, including briefs from groups representing actors, musicians, and librarians.

3: Anthropic Addresses Video Game Cloning With Minor Claude Update

Finally, today, Omar Gallaga at CNet reports that the AI company Anthropic has added new guardrails to its AI systems to prevent users from cloning existing video games.

According to the company, the new guardrail comes in the form of two sentences added to every prompt, which are designed to prevent users from infringing on the copyrights of third parties, including video game companies.

The comes as developers have been using AI to clone various pieces of software, including video games and productivity apps. Anthropic does say that those seeking to generate similar games will be able to do so. Only full clones are blocked.
