1: Nintendo Wipes Out 400+ Switch Emulator Repos in Single-Day GitHub Sweep

First off today, Ernesto Van der Sar at TorrentFreak writes that Nintendo filed seven separate DMCA anti-circumvention takedown notices with GitHub, resulting in more than 400 Switch emulator repos being wiped out in a single sweep.

Nintendo has a long history of targeting emulators, which is software that allows users to play Nintendo games (including pirated ones) on other devices. Nintendo views emulators as a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which makes it illegal to circumvent technological protection measures designed to protect copyrighted works.

Of the emulators targeted, the vast majority were forks of emulators previously shuttered by Nintendo. This includes copies of the Sulu emulator as well as several forks of both Yuzu and Skyline. All three projects shut down some time ago but are often forked or copied by other developers.

2: Music Copyright Group Backtracks on AI-Assisted Song Registration Rule

Next up today, Korea JoongAng Daily reports that South Korea’s music copyright association has withdrawn its new rule that would have allowed AI-assisted songs to be registered and eligible for royalties in South Korea.

Earlier this month, the Korean Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) announced a new rule that would have allowed AI-assisted songs to be registered. It would have required songs to have significant human input before they could be registered, but allowing any amount of AI input was a controversial move.

However, that rule has since been withdrawn. KOMCA made the move after the country’s government called for broader discussions related to the issue. Now KOMCA said that it will be addressing the issue of AI copyright protection with the government and other stakeholders.

3: Betting on Takedown

Finally today, Activ8 reports that it, along with a dozen other news organizations focused on the gambling industry, have been hit with copyright notices over its coverage of alleged collaboration between Sportradar Group AG and gambling operator 1xBet.

According to the analysis, some 14 sites were targeted in notices sent to Google. They alleged that various articles covering the alleged collaboration between the two companies violated copyright law. However, both 1XBet and Sportradar have denied any involvement in filing the notices.

The name on the notice, Alex Gramm, has been tied to similar takedown notices. However, it is unclear who this person is and what, if any, affiliation they have with the sites involved.
