1: Nintendo DMCA Notice Wipes Out 8,535 Yuzu Repos, Mig Switch Also Targeted
First, Andy Maxwell at Torrentfreak reports that Nintendo filed a takedown notice with Github that resulted in the removal of over 8,500 repos of the Yuzu Switch emulator.
In February, the company reached a settlement with the emulator’s developers. The project was shut down, but since the code was open source, others simply reuploaded their versions of it. This includes a fork of the project, Mig Switch.
However, many, if not all, of those GitHub repos are nearly gone now, as a single DMCA notice resulted in GitHub removing thousands of files. Mig Switch/Mig Dumper was also targeted, with various reports of those projects going down.
2: UK Inertia on LLMs and Copyright Is ‘De Facto Endorsement’
Next up today, Lindsay Clark at The Register reports that a committee of UK legislators in the House of Lords has sent a letter to Science and Technology Minister Michelle Donelan claiming that the government is not taking adequate action on the use of copyright-protected work to train AI systems.
According to the letter, ChatGPT’s launch in late 2022 has sparked a backlash from creators and rightsholders, angered over the use of their content to train such systems. They say that the government’s lack of action is “eroding” copyright protections and is a “de facto endorsement” of AI companies’ actions.
The letter follows a committee report that found tech firms were using copyright-protected content without permission and “reaping vast financial rewards.” It also comes as various rightsholders have filed lawsuits against AI companies, seeking compensation for AIs using their work for training.
3: FaZe YourRage Claims He Didn’t Even Have to Request Kendrick Lamar for His Videos to Not Get DMCA’d
Finally today, Richik Bhattacharya at Sporskeeda reports that streamer and YouTuber FaZe YourRage has publicly praised musician Kendrick Lamar for waiving copyright claims on some of his videos.
YouTube allows creators and their representatives to claim videos that feature their content. For FaZe YourRage, this has been an especially large problem as he specializes in “reaction” content that heavily features outside content.
However, he claims that none of his videos of Kendrick Lamar’s work has been claimed, which wasn’t the result of a request. He says that Lamar has decided to waive such claims, allowing the reaction content to stay online and earn revenue for FaZe YourRage.
