1: YouTuber Andrew Callaghan Speaks Out Against Copyright Strike from FOX5

First off today, Grace Stanley at the Daily Dot reports that independent journalist Andew Callaghan has had his most recent video removed from YouTube following a copyright claim filed by the Las Vegas-area TV station FOX5.

Callaghan uploaded a video in late March, documenting the lives of some of the people who live in the tunnels beneath Las Vegas. As part of the video, he used a one-minute clip from the local TV station FOX5, which prompted with station to file a copyright claim on the video, resulting in it being removed.

The video was Callaghan’s first following a nine-month hiatus he took after allegations of sexual misconduct were levied against him. According to Callaghan, he has filed a counternotice but has to wait ten business days for the video to be restored. He says that, by then, the YouTube algorithm will refuse to recommend the video.

2: Publisher Reinforces Paywall With Sci-Hub Blockade in Germany

Next up today, Ernesto Van der Sar at Torrentfreak writes that German internet service providers have agreed to block access to the “shadow library” site Sci-Hub, which provides unlawful free access to academic publications.

In Germany, site blocking is handled through a voluntary agreement between rightsholders and ISPs. Decisions about which sites are blocked are determined by a “clearing body,” which serves as a central authority on the issue. For the first time, that body has approved the blocking of a site at the request of academic publishers, in this case, Sci-Hub.

The order was heavily redacted, so it is unknown who requested the block. However, the order made it clear that rightsholders tried a variety of other approaches to get copyright-infringing material removed, including contacting domain registrars and targeting the hosting of the site itself.

3: Copyright Dispute Between Green Daddy and Sizza Man Ignites Heated Debate

Finally today, Benjie at Mbu reports that, in Uganda, a dispute between two musicians has spilled over into YouTube takedown as one has had the other’s music video removed from the site.

The action was taken by Sizza Man, who claimed that fellow local musician Green Daddy’s video for the song Nansanana is an infringement of one of his earlier works. Greeny Daddy hit back, accusing Sizza Man of trying to extort him to get the song restored, something that he said he refuses to do.

Green Daddy went on to claim that none of Sizza Man’s songs are original, raising questions about both his legal and ethical rights to file the claim. The case is not Sizza Man’s first copyright battle as he recently accused another musician, Gravity Omutujju, of stealing beats from one of his songs.
