1: DataCamp & DISH Settle Massive IPTV Piracy Lawsuit, Still Completely Disagree
First off today, Andy Maxwell at Torrentfreak writes that DISH Network has reached a settlement with the content delivery network provider DataCamp over allegations that DataCamp failed to take adequate action against repeat infringers on its network.
The lawsuit was filed in February 2022 and alleged that some of DataCamp’s customers were pirate websites, some of whom had been subject to hundreds of copyright notices. However, according to DISH, DataCamp failed to terminate those accounts, despite requirements to do so under US law.
The settlement sees DataCamp paying $3 million in damages and agreeing to an enhanced notice and takedown system. DataCamp, for their part, admits no wrongdoing but has agreed to the terms of the settlement.
2: Multiple Major One Piece, JJK Leakers Shut Down Following Arrests
Next up today, Chike Nwaenie at CBR reports that multiple leakers of the manga series One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen have shut down following the arrest of two suspected leakers of the weekly anthology series Weekly Shōnen Jump.
The arrests were announced by police in Kumamoto, who charged the pair with leaking a pair of magazines before their official release date. Both suspects admitted to the first leak but denied the second was them.
The arrests has caused others in the leaking community to close down, including various websites and social media accounts connected to their operations. According to the magazine’s publisher, Shueisha, leaking has been an especially large problem and one that has directly harmed both them and the artists that work on the projects.
3: Court Adjourns N5tn Copyright Infringement Suit against Works Ministry to May 2
Finally today, Alex Enumah at This Day reports that, in Nigeria, a court has moved to postponed lawsuit filed against the Federal Ministry of Works and others involved with a country-wide project to build tourist centers and rest stops along the nation’s roads.
The lawsuit was filed by Hugiano Embold Solutions Ltd and Kenneth Ibe-Kalu alleging that the country took their idea for a series of tourist centers and turned it into a different project. They claim to have raised the initial $15 billion required for the massive project but were eventually cut out. They are now suing for N5 trillion, which is worth approximately $3.5 billion.
The adjournment comes after the first witnesses ended their testimony. The article doesn’t give a clear reason for why the case was postponed after testimony was given, but the lawsuit alleges the government violated their copyright by using their designs as part of the renamed project.
