1: Brandy Melville Sues Shein for Copyright Infringement, Unfair Competition

First off today, Laurel Deppen at Fashion Dive reports that fast fashion company Brandy Melville has filed a lawsuit against Shein, accusing the internet retailer of copyright infringement.

Brandy Melville filed the complaint in California. The company claims that Shein copied multiple of their product designs, including sweatshirts, shorts and skirts. However, in addition to the copyright-protected designs, the lawsuit also focuses on the use of copyright-infringing images on the Shein website.

This is just the latest in a long line of lawsuits against Shein, with multiple fashion companies accusing the site of infringement. However, it is a first for Brandy Melville, which itself was sued by Forever 21 in 2016. That case was settled out of court.

2: Music Industry Bodies Secure Leave to Challenge New Copyright Guidelines

Next up today, Ho Kit Yen at the Daily Express reports that, in Malaysia, the High Court has granted two music industry organizations leave to challenge a new regulatory framework that is scheduled to come into effect next year.

At issue is the Guidelines of Copyright (Collective Management Organizations) 2025. Two of those collective management organizations allege that the guidelines were issued without proper consultation and are invalid. The guidelines would drastically change how CMOs operate in the country.

However, the organizations allege that they only became aware of the details in the plan after it was published. They allege they were not given adequate time to respond to the proposal. The new changes are currently slated to take effect in January 2026.

3: Supreme Court Grants Relief to Director Sujoy Ghosh in Copyright Case Over Kahaani 2 Movie

Finally, today, Ritwik Choudhury at Bar and Bench reports that the Supreme Court in India is taking up an appeal filed by filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh to dismiss a criminal complaint against him.

Fellow filmmaker Umesh Prasad Mehta filed the complaint. He alleged that Ghosh’s 2016 film, Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh, infringes on his script, entitled Sabak. Mehta claims to have given Ghost a copy of the script in 2015, something Ghosh denies. Ghost claims to have been working on his script since at least 2012.

A lower court refused to dismiss the criminal complaint, prompting Ghost to appeal to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case and has already ruled that no coercive action should be taken against Ghosh and that he should be exempt from personal appearance during the proceedings.
