1: Nine Accused of Breaching Copyright by Publishing Social Media Pictures of Bondi Junction Stabbing Victim

First off, today, The Australian Associated Press reports that a stabbing victim’s family member has filed a lawsuit against Australia’s Nine News Network and the Sydney Morning Herald, alleging copyright infringement over a Facebook photo.

Ashley Wildey filed the lawsuit. His partner, Dawn Singleton, was one of six killed in a Sydney shopping center in April 2024 in a mass-stabbing event. Wildey accuses Nine Media of using a photo taken from Facebook in their 60 Minutes program.

That lawsuit has now been expanded to include the Sydney Morning Herald, a sister publication. The paper used a social media photo of Singleton but credited it to “Facebook.” Wildey said this was extremely hurtful and an infringement of her copyright.

2: DISH Sues ‘Pirate’ IPTV Services Lemo and Kemo in U.S. Court

Next up today, Ernesto Van der Sar at Torrentfreak writes that DISH Network has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the operators of Lemo TV and Kemo IPTV.

The lawsuit does not name the operators directly, identifying them as “John Doe.” Part of the lawsuit’s goal is to unmask those operators and then target them directly in the case. According to the lawsuit, the services operate across various domains; offering uses paid but illegal access to DISH Network content.

DISH said a variety of tech companies may be able to help identify the infringers. These include CloudFlare, Namecheap, PayPal and GoDaddy, to name a few. They seek $25 million in damages for infringing at least 171 works.

3: Woman Suing Taylor Swift Says She’s Struggling To Find Her…Again

Finally today, Jenna Sundel at Newsweek reports that Florida artist Kimberly Marasco is again having issues serving papers to Taylor Swift. This issue has already caused Swift to be dismissed from one of Sundel’s lawsuits.

Marasco accuses Swift, and those who worked with her, of infringing several of her works in songs and music videos. However, the case has been put on hold until all the defendants have been served. As of this writing, all but Swift have been.

Marasco says she is facing extreme difficulty in serving Swift, including the use of multiple business entities, security around her home, and her travel/touring schedule. Swift was dropped from a similar lawsuit filed by Marasco over service issues and that may happen again in this case.
