2: Jimi Hendrix Copyright Dispute Proceeds to Trial as Sony Losses Appeal

Next up today, Maria Ward-Brennan at City AM reports that, in the UK, the estates of two Jimmy Hendrix bandmates will get their day in court after an appeals court ruled in favor of the estates.

The case focuses on the estates of John Mitchell and Noel Redding. The two men played with Hendrix as part of the band The Jimmy Hendrix Experience and recorded three albums together.

The estates sued Sony in 2022, claiming that Redding and Mitchell should own a share of the sound recording copyrights. Sony filed for a motion to dismiss, but the judge denied that. Sony then appealed that denial and lost again. That has set the stage for the case to go to trial in December.

The film’s producers have been waging an anti-piracy campaign. This includes awareness campaigns, encouraging people to view the film in theaters for the best experience.

However, early piracy has raised concerns that the film may struggle to become profitable, despite being one of the most anticipated films in the country.
