1: UK’s House of Lords Votes to Strengthen Copyright Protections in AI, Dealing Blow to Government’s Plans

First off today, Mandy Dalugdug at Music Business Worldwide reports that, in the UK, the House of Lords voted in favor of amendments to the Data Bill that strengthen copyright protections in the country.

The move is seen as a blow to the ruling Labour Party, which has been proposing weakening copyright laws in the country to help AI companies train their models. The provisions passed the House of Lords despite the Labour Party actively campaigning against them and the Conservatives largely abstaining.

The House of Lords is the final step for a bill after the House of Commons has passed it. This indicates that the House of Lords is unlikely to support any bill weakening copyright in the country, creating a potential roadblock for future legislation.

2: LLM Taken Down Following Legal Pressure from Anti-Piracy Group

Next up today, Ernesto Van der Sar at Torrentfreak writes that the Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN secured the removal of the GEITje large language model (LLM).

According to BREIN, the GEITje was trained using the infamous Books3 dataset, which contains an extensive library of pirated ebooks. BREIN alleged that this made the model a copyright infringement and demanded that it be removed.

GEITje’s creator disagreed with BREIN but said he lacked the resources to fight them legally. As such, the owner voluntarily shut down the project and there are currently no plans for a comeback or a follow up release.

3: Popular Sports Twitch Streamer Casimiro Ditches Platform for YouTube Over Copyright Confusion

Finally today, Brendon Kleen at Awful Announcing reports that Casimiro, a popular Brazilian soccer commentator, is moving his live streams exclusively to YouTube following copyright issues at Twitch.

In December, Twitch banned his channel, CazéTV, for streaming the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final. However, Casimiro has a partnership with FIFA, giving him livestreaming rights to FIFA events.

His Twitch channel has nearly 4 million followers and his streams regularly bring in millions of viewers. For example, a stream he did this past weekend on YouTube drew more than 7 million viewers to the platform.
