3 Count: CMI TMI
Have any suggestions for the 3 Count? Let me know via Twitter @plagiarismtoday.
1: Judge tosses publishers’ copyright suit against OpenAI
First off today, Lindsay Clark at The Register reports that a judge has tossed a copyright infringement lawsuit filed against OpenAI over the alleged removal of copyright management information (CMI) from their work.
Raw Story and AltNet filed the lawsuit. They alleged that OpenAI had removed the description, copyright status, and other information from their work before training their AI systems. However, the lawsuit didn’t address the broader questions of copyright infringement and instead solely targeted the removal of CMI.
The judge dismissed the case, saying CMI removal was not the core disagreement. Other lawsuits examine that question directly and are ongoing. In this case, the judge has allowed the plaintiffs to file an amended complaint.
2: Piracy Kingpin Behind ‘Noonoo TV’ and ‘TVWiki’ Arrested in Korea
Next up today, Ernesto Van der Sar at Torrentfreak writes that authorities in South Korea have shuttered the popular TVWIKI piracy service and arrested the alleged operator.
The story began last year when the piracy site Noonoo unexpectedly shut down. It was followed by TVWIKI, which had many similarities to Noonoo. Now, TVWIKI has been shuttered by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and its founder has been arrested. It’s believed that the same person was behind both sites.
The same person is also believed to have operated OKTOON, a pirate site that previously specialized in comics. The publisher, WEBTOON, filed a DMCA subpoena against that site. However, it is unclear if the actions have any correlation.
3: The White Stripes Drop ‘Seven Nation Army’ Copyright Lawsuit Against Trump
Finally today, Judy Kurtz at The Hill reports that The White Stripes have dropped their copyright infringement lawsuit against President-elect Donald Trump.
The band filed the lawsuit after the Trump campaign used their song Seven Nation Army in a video promoting the candidate. The video was later removed, but the lawsuit moved forward.
However, the band has now asked the judge to drop the lawsuit without prejudice, meaning that they can refile it later if they choose to. Jack White, the band’s lead singer, has been heavily critical of President-elect Trump on and off social media since the lawsuit was filed.
