1: Meta Hit With New Author Copyright Lawsuit Over AI Training
First off today, Blake Brittain at Reuters reports that novelist Christopher Farnsworth has become the latest creator to sue Meta Platforms over alleged infringement of his work to train AI systems.
According to the lawsuit, Meta used Farnworth’s books to train Llama, the language model that powers its various AI tools. Farnsworth claims that Meta used a “trove” of copyright-infringing content to trail Llama, prompting him to seek monetary damages and an injunction barring future infringement.
Farnsworth is the latest in over a dozen plaintiffs filing lawsuits against various AI companies. The AI companies, however, have said that their use of copyright-protected material is fair use and not an infringement of those works.
2: Court Rules Against Photographer Who Sued AI Dataset for Copyright Theft
Next up today, Matt Growcoot at PetaPixel reports that a photographer in Germany has lost his bid to hold an AI dataset liable for the use of his images.
Stock photographer Robert Kneschke filed the lawsuit, claiming that many of his photos were used in the LAION image dataset, which is used to train various AI systems. However, the Hamburg Regional Court found that since the dataset is free, its use falls under a copyright exemption for research purposes.
Kneschke argued that the dataset was being widely used by for-profit AI companies, limiting that exception. The court ruled that the later dataset use did not alter the protections LAION enjoys.
3: Meow Wolf Files Lawsuit Over Alleged Copyright
Finally today, Nick Catlin at KOAT7 reports that the art collective Meow Wolf has filed a lawsuit against the UK, claiming copyright infringement in one of their works of art.
The lawsuit targets Wake the Tiger, an “amazement park” in Bristol. The park features numerous interactive and immersive art elements. However, according to Meow Wolf, one of those elements is an infringement of a similar work they own.
Though Wake the Tiger did not comment on the infringement, it highlighted that Meow Wolf is a large US corporation while they are a team of independent artists.
