1: Skibidi Toilet Allegedly Hits Garry’s Mod with DMCA Strike for Copyright Infringement
First off today, Jeremy Gan at Dexerto reports that DaFuq!?Boom!, the maker of Skibidi Toilet, has filed a DMCA notice with Garry’s Mod to remove assets related to the meme from the game.
Garry Newman created Garry’s Mod, which serves as a way for other creators to make movies or even new games. Assets related to the Skibidi Toilet meme have recently appeared in the game, likely uploaded by users, prompting the notice to be filed with Steam.
The notice was filed by Invisible Narratives, LLC, DaFuq!?Boom!’s company. It cites a copyright registration that lists four assets related to the meme, all of which he claims to own. However, the move has drawn criticism over DaFuq!?Boom!’s own use of outside material in creating the meme videos.
2: ‘Indian Police Pinpoint Seat of Movie “Camming” Pirate by Analyzing the Film Angle’
Next up today, Ernesto Van der Sar at Torrentfreak writes that, in 2019, India updated its copyright law to expressly outlaw the “camming” of movies. However, despite the new law, enforcement of it has been slow.
However, police in Ernakulam arrested 33-year-old Jebe Stephan Raj for allegedly camming premiere movies. They discovered him by analyzing the videos he recorded, tracking them down to a specific theater and even a specific set of seats. From there, they tracked the phone number used to register the tickets and then waited for another ticket to be purchased for a premiere.
They then claim to have observed Raj using a cup-mounted tripod to record the film Raayan. He was arrested and reportedly confessed to the camming and claimed to be an “admin” of the pirate site TamilRockers. However, the latter claim is suspect, with most believing that outsiders hired him to record the film.
3: 6ix9ine Hit with Harsh Penalty Following “stoopid” Copyright Judgement
Finally today, Cole Blake at HotNewHipHop reports that rapper 6ix9ine has lost a copyright infringement case over his song Stoopid. Howerver, the ruling may not be all that impactful as it is a default judgment, after 6ix9ine or his lawyers failed to participate in the case.
The lawsuit was filed by Seth Gordon. Gordon claimed that the song Stoopid used the Yung Gordon Intro music composition for nine seconds at the beginning of the song. However, 6ix9ine failed to respond to the lawsuit, resulting in a default judgment against him.
The damages awarded amount to 1/13th the profits of the album, totaling $61,538.46. This is in addition to $12,000 in legal fees that 6ix9ine has been ordered to pay.
