1: Japanese Media Say AI Search Infringes Copyright, Urge Legal Reform

First off today, Kyodo News reports that the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association has released a statement calling for AI companies to obtain consent before using news content to train AI systems.

The organization expressed concern about how such AI systems often return inaccurate responses or rewrite existing works. They allege that AI systems don’t drive traffic like traditional search engines, putting them in a different class.

The organization is asking the Japanese government to update the country’s copyright law urgently. A Google spokesperson said that its AI services comply with Japan’s copyright laws and that it has a “long-term cooperative” relationship with Japanese news organizations.

2: DAZN: Force Cloudflare to Join Piracy Shield, Prosecute IPTV Buyers ASAP

Next up today, Andy Maxwell at Torrentfreak writes that the Director of External and Public Affairs for DAZN spoke to an Italian subcommittee regarding the challenge of dealing with IPTV piracy and proposed several changes to Italian law.

The first change would require intermediaries like Cloudflare to sign up with the country’s Piracy Shield platform. The platform allows instant blocking of pirate streams, but pirates hiding by Cloudflare and other services have frustrated it.

DAZN also proposed prosecuting end streamers, saying that it was a “fundamental step” towards addressing piracy in the nation. According to DAZN, this would require targeting a significant number of individuals to have a deterrent effect.

3: MPA Hires Head of Global Litigation to Oversee Anti-Piracy Legal Matters

Finally today, Carolyn Giardina at Variety reports that the Motion Picture Association (MPA) has Marissa Bostick to serve as its new senior vice president and head of global litigation. In that role, she will be responsible for overseeing the organization’s global anti-piracy efforts.

Before that, she was a deputy director for counterfeit crimes at Amazon. She has also worked as an attorney in the United States and has taught criminal law at various universities.

Bostick says that she hopes to bolster the organization’s anti-piracy efforts to better protect the work of both its members and members of the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE).
