3 Count: Thanks Sherlock

Have any suggestions for the 3 Count? Let me know via Twitter @plagiarismtoday.

1: MPAA Shuts Down 50+ Torrent Sites

First off today, the MPAA has announced that, through a partnership with the Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN, it has closed some 51 torrent sites. This includes 12 sites within the U.S. and 39 abroad, all closed by working with the sites’ hosting providers. However, the MPAA has not released the names of the affected sites, saying that they don’t want to give them free promotion and make it easier to set back up, but the major players still appear to be online. No word on if any of the sites have been able to reestablish operations.

2: 2 Va. Brothers Plead to Copyright Infringement

Next up today, two Virginia brothers have plead guilty to one count of copyright infringement after they were caught with some $360,000 worth of illegal discs, including some 3,600 DVDs and $19,400 CDs. Also seized was some $10,000 in cash and their business records. The goods are suspected to have come from Mexico and the two men will be sentenced at a later date.

3: The Authorized Sleuth

Finally today, British author Anthony Horowitz has been commissioned by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories, to write a new novel featuring the famous fictional detective. The move is interesting because the copyright on the Holmes stories have, for the most part, expired. They are completely expired in the UK and only the last volume is still under copyright in the U.S. However, according to the estate, they plan on giving the book a “unique seal of approval” that will make it “official” and thus better than the unofficial stories other authors can legally write.
