Have any suggestions for the 3 Count? Let me know via Twitter @plagiarismtoday.

1: Music File-Sharer ‘Oink’ Cleared of Fraud

First off today, former Oink admin Alan Ellis was cleared for fraud charges today for running the infamous file sharing site in the first such trial in the UK. At its peak, before its closure, Oink reportedly had nearly 200,000 members and aided in the swapping of some 21 million files. Ellis had been charged with defrauding copyright holders, in large part for his acceptance of donations to run the site. The trial lasted seven days.

2: Digital Rights Group Pushes FCC to Protect Net Neutrality

Next up today, net nutrality legislation is bumping up against copyright as the EFF and other consumer-rights groups are expressing concern about a “loophole” in current net neutrality proposals that would allow corporations to interfere with Internet traffic for “activities such as the unlawful distribution of copyrighted works.” An Internet-based campaign is underway to try and remove that particular clause.

3: Comcast’s BitTorrent Settlement Excludes Pirates

Finally, in a related story, if you were affected by Comcast’s throttling of Bittorrent, you may be able to collect a $16 refund from a settlement. However, only if you swear under penalty of perjury that you were not using bittorrent to download infringing materials. The clause is largely expected to greatly reduce the number of people who file claims and collect money.

Suggestions

That’s it for the three count today. We will be back tomorrow with three more copyright links. If you have a link that you want to suggest a link for the column or have any proposals to make it better. Feel free to leave a comment or send me an email. I hope to hear from you.

In what can only be described as a wild week for copyright news the music industry takes the lead in both making news and creating controversy.

It was a big week for copyright news with the music industry generating a very high volume of stories. We have updates on Metallica’s new Internet plan and the controversy around it, a clash between Radiohead and Prince, the first user arrests in the Oink case and the first criminal court ruling for online music piracy.

However, the headline from the week was Mediadefender allegedly taking down Revision3 in a DOS attack for reasons that are not wholly clear at this time.

In addition to that, we have new developments in the Google/Viacom lawsuit, the AllofMP3 case, the CSS case in Finland and much more.

Remember, as usual, this week’s linkroll is a “raw” link list. Some stories are duplicated, some do not point to their original sources and some may not be accurate. A great deal of refining goes into producing the show notes for the Copyright 2.0 Show.

The response to last week’s conversation about linkblogging was nothing extremely one sided. Everyone, it seems, was in favor of the idea.

So, beginning this week, every Saturday I am posting a collection of links that I have gathered over the past seven days. Please bear in mind that this is a “raw” linkblog. This is the links as I find them and the specific links may change before I create my show notes for the Copyright 2.0 Show, others will be eliminated and there may be some duplicate stories as told on different sites.

Let me know what you think and how I can make this feature more useful in the future!

Between opening night for the haunted house Saturday, a houseful of ghoulish guests and an alarm clock that didn’t understand daylight savings time had one more week, it is amazing I got up Sunday morning at all.

However, despite the obstacles, I did and I sat down Chris from Numly.com to discuss the week’s copyright news and views.

All totaled, the show had fifteen stories, including the following:

OINK Gets Slaughtered

TV Links Changes the Channel

IMSLP Goes Down… For Little Reason

An MPAA Hacker Tells All

Hulu Debuts… Today!

And Many more…

You can download the MP3 file here. Those interested in subscribing to the show can do so via this feed.

I want to thank everyone for their support and understanding this past week as I’ve had to be away from the site a bit more. The opening night of the haunted house went great. We processed about fifty people and plan to open again Halloween night, where we expect many times that.

I should be around more these next few days but I do have repair work and improvements to make between now and Wednesday. Hopefully we should be back to a full-on ordinary schedule by the end of this week.

Thank you again and, if any one is interested, I’ll post pics and video of it in my Divshare account after it is done.
