Copyright 2.0 Show – Episode 257 – Valuable Lyrics

Microphone ImageIt is Friday again and that means that it is time for another episode of the Copyright 2.0 Show.

This week, we ask the simple question: What is the value of a song’s lyrics? Previously, the answer would be “not much” as you might get them free in the liner notes of a CD or have to write them down yourself. However, with the Internet, lyrics have become much more important, giving way to an entire cottage industry and, with this new industry, comes a new set of legal challenges, one of which concluded this week to the tune of $6.6 million.

However, there is a lot more copyright news this week. We also have the latest on the Hathitrust lawsuit, DC Comics’ case involving Superman and a hosting change for The Pirate Bay. All this and much more on the Copyright 2.0 Show!

This week’s stories include:

  • Music Publishers Score Major Win Against Illegal Lyrics Sites
  • Judge Rules Fair Use Protects HathiTrust’s Digital Library
  • DC Comics Gets to Keep Superman
  • The Pirate Bay Ditches Physical Servers, Heads to the Cloud
  • Photographer Sues Apple Over Advertisements
  • Apple Agrees to License Iconic Swiss Clock
  • One Single DMCA Notice Shuttered All of Edublogs’ Sites
