How do you feel about the wordpress plugin for BackType that allows bloggers to import external comments about their post (say from reddit, Digg, and other blogs) and republish it on their site?

Personally, I see it as a valuable service for me and my readers and allows me to bring the conversation back to my blog (which is the original source of these comments). Is it plagiarism though or do bloggers have some right to repost comments about their article on their site?

My biggest beef, in all honesty, remains that there is no way for the commenter to opt out. It seems a bit backwards to require the Webmaster of all the sites a person comments on to blacklist the spider for someone to be removed. Something that is commenter-centric needs to have a commenter-centric opt out.

I'm not wholly comfortable with their displaying full comments, especially on longer works, I think it is an infringement and would be held as such, but I still see a lot of potential for this service. Let us hope they find a way to balance the issues with the benefits.

Thank you very much for your comment!

Jonathan,

I'm not with you here:(
My comment is not a blog post. I can claim it on backtype. It has link to my blog. I have no problem if it is copied or indexed by search engines. And I want to read the full comments without the need to navigate to the target post.
In my mind, the value of this service exceed this little vice.
I do agree with you that there should be a clear and easy option to opt out.

I'll read your answer on backtype (fully):)

Keren
