Forrest:

It is funny how virtually every pressing issue comes down to hurting the immediate bottom line. Describes about four other news items doesn't it?

Is some grasping at straws allowed? I'll begrudgingly allow the usenet analogy if we just focus on the rise of spam and don't blame the spam for the death of Usenet. It is one thing to say how spam started to overrun Usenet and then compare that to the Web, which seems much more valid, than to outright blame spam for the death of Usenet.

Just my thoughts on it.

Beau:

Agreed. Especially not the extreme he pushed it.

This sounds a great deal like other pressing issues of our time:

It is only after spam begins to hurt the immediate bottom line that we are going to see a real change in course. However, by that time, it might be too late.

I agree that Usenet isn't a good comparison ... on the other hand, there really has never been a historical analogue for the internet. Maybe a little bit of grasping at straws should be allowed? I don't know of anyone who takes Squidoo seriously ... and for generally the same reasons as Usenet, most of Craigslist, and broad sections of Wikipedia.
