New Feature: Top Commentators

By Jonathan Bailey • Jul 28th, 2007 • Category: Articles, Housekeeping

I’ve added a new feature to the side bar of this site, a Top Commentators list. The list, which counts all comments that a person has made over the past 90 days gives credit and a link to the top ten commentators during that time.

Currently, Jeremy Steele and Patrick are tied for first at ten a piece, however, it is almost certainly something that will fluctuate wildly.

I wanted to do something to give back to the people that help make the discussion on this site great and encourage others to jump in.

Please let me know what you think of the new feature. To do that, I highly recommend leaving a comment.

(Note: This feature wouldn’t have been practical without the reCAPTCHA plugin keeping the spam bots at bay, my thanks goes to them for their work!)

  1. I win :P

  2. Cool. :) A bit surprised, but it’s a great blog.

  3. And the race is on! LOL! This is a good idea to generate comments rather than direct ‘contact” questions like I am in the habit of asking.

I know I often feel my questions are dumb, but now that I have my own blog, I understand that putting questions in comments is often better. It really helps future users of a site find an answer. I have had a question of two on other sites where I have been almost embarrassed to ask. After I post a comment with the question, others chime in saying they have the same issue, sometimes even thanking me for being able to articulate the question.

    Go figure!!

  4. And now here is a question in a comment… Are you using a plugin to get the notify box for followup comments?

btw: I have a hard time reading the particular captcha form you are now using. Anyone else have to try a couple of times to get it right?

  5. And now I have moved up the list! Probably the only place in the world I am ahead of Lorelle!

OK, I’ll stop now. I have been working all afternoon on issues where Firefox displays things perfectly, but IE does not like my code. I’m getting punchy. (And VERY mad at IE!)

  6. Jeremy and Patrick,

Glad you like the feature. It’s only a pity that I can’t play…

    Will,

If you have a problem reading reCAPTCHA, just hit the refresh button, you should get another one you can read. I haven’t had any myself that have given me trouble but I am wary of that.

Let me know if it keeps up, I’m glad that you like the feature!

  7. This is a great add to your site. did you buy a scipt that does the adding of the comments automatic?

  8. ohh - I like it. Where can I get a top commenters widget?

  9. Teeceo & Suzanne,

    Here’s a link to the plugin I used: http://www.pfadvice.com/wordpress-plugins/show-top-commentators/

It is completely free and works well. They’ve also made a widget but, Suzanne, both widget and plugin are for WordPress only that I know of. No word yet about a Blogger one.

    Hope that helps!
