Good concept, poor execution. iCopyright launched a similar system in 1998, now used on over 10 million works. This appears to be a great implementation of a very creative idea. Before I heard about this, I had been hoping to rely on the Internet archive (archive.org), but my sites still haven’t been indexed by their bot, and there seems to be no way to submit a URL. The Internet Archive also wouldn’t be a very good way to have proof of ownership of e-books that are sold through CJ or other sites that don’t publish the entire work online.

I’ve got a couple of ideas that might make it easier for ESBN generation to be automated. I’ll e-mail Chris about them. Thanks for this informative review!

I couldn’t find out much about who is behind ESBN.org, but now see it is Chris Matthieu on his own. It is a brilliant, worthy idea, but I think there’s the need for a significant consortium of some kind to bless it and present a board of directors type structure to ensure its long-term effect. Otherwise it’s largely a one-off by an inspired individual.

I also find it interesting that while you praise it as the next best idea for copyright protection, you don’t apply on your posting. Would have been an easy gimmick to display your blog entry’s ESPN (I know, its not your idea, but its your piece about it).
